Team Software Process (TSP) from SEI --
The
Menlo Institute is offering training in Team Software Process from the
Software Engineering Institute (SEI) and Carnegie Mellon University. TSP
provides a formal framework to manage software development projects in a highly
disciplined model. Interested in learning more? Come to
a free 90-minute introduction on Thursday January 30th
or
schedule a special presentation at your location.
Provided in cooperation with Heath Solutions
Inc., an SEI authorized Transition Partner.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Project Managers are encouraged to join the local
Huron Valley Chapter of the Project Management Institute ( PMI). The
Chapter has a focus on Information Technology and, in addition to monthly
presentations, offers preparation classes for the Certified Project Management
Professional(PMP) exam. The cost for the PMP class is very reasonable. The
next set of classes begins on March 1st.

Menlo helps people cope with the hard times in high-tech
by offering special scholarships for individuals transitioning between jobs. If
you know of a talented technical person who is just watching reruns of Oprah
then have them check out
Menlo's public class schedule. If they see an interesting class encourage
them to ask if a scholarship seat is available, for they may be able to attend
at a significant savings! The next
Secrets of Software Success class on Tuesday, January 28th has
scholarship seats available so tell your friends "Don't just sit at home, learn
something!" Please have them send a message to Richard Sheridan at
rsheridan@menloinnovations.com for scholarship requests and information.

The XP Agile Universe Conference is on the horizon. This year
it's scheduled for August 10-13, 2003. The deadline for submissions is
February 28, 2003. See the
conference site for additional details.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Over 435 people have attended our free "Taste of Software Success" presentations
in the past year; their enthusiastic response keeps this offering in the Menlo
line-up. The 90-minute presentation covers the top six reasons why
software projects fail and what practices should be in place to avoid them.
It's next offered on Wednesday, February 13. Please visit our website
for additional information and to register.

Public speaking is often listed as a #1 fear for most people. However, at Menlo, we enjoy public
speaking and specialize in providing dynamic speakers for user groups, clubs,
conferences and businesses. Are you interested in improving your software
development practices? Then e-mail Richard Sheridan
rsheridan@menloinnovations.com to schedule a speaker for your next event.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Custom Software Development, The Menlo Way -- Menlo
offers more than just training on software development best practices. We
actually build software using the practices we teach. If you need high-quality
custom software at affordable prices, please give us a call at (734) 665-1847.
The Menlo Software Factory is here for you!
____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Moore's Law or April Fools? -- We teach
Moore's Law as an important metaphor for the rate at which technology is
changing around us, potentially threatening our projects. Reading
this article about credit card sized 5GB hard drives, I realized it is
becoming more and more difficult to distinguish between real technology stories
and April Fools' jokes. The part of the story that said "the hard disk data is
accessed on a tiny spinning disk inside the thin card" initially made me
skeptical. Technology marches on. Is your software development process agile
enough to take advantage of it?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________ The Menlo Briefs Update is produced by The Menlo Institute
and edited by Richard Sheridan. It is a permission-based newsletter for Menlo
friends and customers detailing information about classes, seminars, articles
and other events of local interest. For additional information about The Menlo
Institute, please visit our website at
www.menloinnovations.com.
